There once were two young men who lived in the orient and sat for long hours weaving tapestries for their master. Each morning they were given a new supply of yarn for the day. Some of it was beautiful – colored to represent the more pleasant emotions.
There were also the dark and dismal threads that represented the unpleasant emotions One day the allotment of yarn delivered to them was a huge pile of primarily black yarn. One of the young men was discouraged by such a depressing color. His displeasure was reflected in the pattern that he wove – harsh, hard patches. The other young man used his share of the black yarn with “understanding and sympathy.” In the yarn that had been delivered to them were also threads of gold for happiness, purple for pain, and blue for discouragement. The discouraged man didn’t even bother to use the other colors. The second man skillfully blended his allotment of precious threads with care and artistry into the pattern.
When the master arrived to inspect their work the first young man complained. “You haven’t given us the proper yarn!” His tapestry was mediocre at best.
When the master examined the second man’s work he found it to be a “masterpiece” of the weaver’s art! Light was mingled with shadow.
”Both of you had the same materials and you used them as you chose. It is not what comes to your life that determines the pattern, but the use you make of it!”
As we go through life, we cannot escape trials, troubles, disappointments, sickness, temptation, and many other challenges along the way. THESE COME TO EVERYONE. It is what we do about them and with them that determine the pattern and design of our lives.
So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful creator and continue to do good.” 1 Peter 4:19
