Thy Word Is a Lamp unto My Feet

Mr. William McPherson lost his eyes and hands in a dynamite explosion. He found it difficult to face the world of darkness.

God’s Word became extremely important to him. He wanted to read the Bible, but he couldn’t master Braille with artificial hands. He tried to read the raised letters with his lips, but the dynamite had seared them until he had no feeling in them.

One day he discovered he could distinguish letters with his tongue. As he eagerly sought to learn Braille, his tongue became sore, raw, and would bleed. He would stay up all night just to learn one more letter of the alphabet. He prayed for grace and help that he might continue to learn.

Over sixty-five years, spent in darkness, he read the entire Bible over four times with his tongue.

Did I hear someone say, “I can’t do something?” Really, it depends on how much we want to do it. We should count it a real joy to be physically able to attend Bible class with those of like interest to discuss God’s word. The Bible is God speaking to us – let us listen to Him regularly.

1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
