The sovereignty of God instills in us confidence, security, and assurance because we know God is in control of everything that goes on in our life. So we trust God and follow Jesus because we know spiritual success and life success in general (joy, peace, serenity, etc.) is guaranteed because God promises to bless those who submit to Him ruling in their life.
Some of the lyrics in the song Great I Am are as follows:
The great I am
The mountains shake before you the demons run in fear
At the mention of the name king of majesty
There is no power in hell
Or any who can stand
Before the power and the presence of the great I am
“The mountains shake” is figurative speech for God’s powerful control over the most powerful and sturdy things we can imagine. “The demons run in fear” means even the spirit realm, of which we are very puny in comparison, are terrified of God’s power sovereignty.
When I prepare for a sermon I may read the passage I am going to preach 5, 10, or 15 times to really get the feel of the flow of the passage. Read Psalm 46 (again 🙂) and listen to Great I Am by Phillips, Craig and Dean.
Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
