Favorite Song

You know when you hear a new song and over a week or so the more you hear it the more you like it and eventually it becomes your favorite song? The melody is perfect – you can’t understand why some musician hasn’t created this melody a long time ago. And the lyrics – the lyrics fit your life like a glove. You play the song over and over again. The next thing you know you are singing it throughout the day. You even memorize the words. You crank up the volume and sing it like a rock star as you drive down the road. You listen to it over and over again because it just does something beautiful to your spirit.

You know when you come to know the Lord and you grow to love Him? His ways are perfect – you can’t understand why you didn’t come to know Him sooner. His words fit your life like a glove. He knows everything about you yet He still loves you. You sing songs of praise to Him over and over again. You know some spiritual songs and memorize the lyrics easily because the song makes so much sense as you look at your own life as you walk with the Lord.

The difference between a favorite song and knowing the Lord is that we NEVER tire of being close to Him, and we ALWAYS keep growing (not fading) in our relationship with Him. We crave to be close to the Lord just like David when he wrote, “Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6). God’s love for us and our love for Him is so consuming that we say like David, “One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life” (Psalm 27:4). Imagine having one request granted to you in life and you ask that it be to dwell in the presence of the Lord forever! That’s not wishful thinking or pie in the sky spirituality – that’s growing to know God so well that you only want Him. Then top it off by getting to know exactly what God is like by studying the gospels and coming to know Jesus. You know when you see Jesus you see the Father (John 14:7-11).  We want to be with Him in glory more than anything else in the world. We will never regret spending time with the Lord and we will be forever grateful we made Jesus number one in our lives.

Read Psalm 27:1-14 and listen to Favorite Song by TobyMac.

Psalm 27

The Lord is my light and my salvation;

Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the defense of my life;
Whom shall I dread?
When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh,
My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell.
Though a host encamp against me,
My heart will not fear;
Though war arise against me,
In spite of this I shall be confident.

One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord
And to meditate in His temple.
For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle;
In the secret place of His tent He will hide me;
He will lift me up on a rock.
And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me,
And I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice,
And be gracious to me and answer me.
When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You,
“Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.”
Do not hide Your face from me,
Do not turn Your servant away in anger;
You have been my help;
Do not abandon me nor forsake me,
O God of my salvation!
For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
But the Lord will take me up.

Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a level path
Because of my foes.
Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries,
For false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as breathe out violence.
I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.
