One of the most deceptive schemes of the devil is to con people into thinking that Sunday worship is for them rather than for God. Many people “go to church” to see what they can get out of it. If it is uplifting enough, and if they are filled, and maybe even entertained, then they spent their time in a worthwhile manner. What is worse is that church leaders have fallen into the devil’s trap of thinking they need to meet peoples’ desires… so worship is geared toward pleasing people rather than God.
Hopefully, our worship to God is meaningful to us. BUT the goal of our worship MUST NOT be to please us… Sunday worship is a time that we get together and pour out our hearts to God. We honor and adore Him because He deserves it. God has been so good to us. We owe Him our very life. When we come together we are on a mission, and that mission is to tell God what we think of Him and how grateful and indebted we are to Him for saving our souls.
If we try to please people, we will be barking up the wrong tree. PLUS, we will find ourselves not only competing with other churches, we will have to compete with golf, fishing, television, shopping, etc. Let’s face it, “church” is not fun. It is not meant to be fun. And besides that, we are not in the entertainment business, we are in the “God-serving” business.
We must – we must be here today and every Sunday for the right reason… to pour out our hearts before God in humble adoration. The natural result will be that we will be blessed… here and in eternity.
I have to end with a confession. The above title: “The Dentist Who Killed a Hairless Donkey” has absolutely nothing to do with this article. I wanted to make sure I had your attention because what I addressed is of the utmost importance.
