I have heard most of the arguments why Christians should not buy lottery tickets, but there is one that is often overlooked. If you watch people being interviewed about what they would do with all those millions if they were to win, you will see a “never mind heaven – give me the lottery” attitude. If you listen to those who’ve actually won the lottery you will hear “never mind heaven – give me the lottery” sound in nearly all of them.
This deceived mindset is recorded in our nation’s history as thousands raced to California in the 1800’s in pursuit of gold. In their minds gold would give them heaven on earth.
The “get rich quick” scheme has distracted many from the glory of heaven. The “pie in the sky” addiction has ruined many lives – not to mention the souls of those who have allowed the love of money to cause them to fall into the devil’s trap (I Timothy 6:9). When will people seek God with as much fervor as they chase after the things of this world?
The attractiveness of riches can cause even Christians to lose their perspective about what is really valuable treasure (Matthew 6:19-21). Heaven in heaven is beyond comparison with heaven on earth. Don’t fall for the big lie – don’t believe in the “Almighty Dollar” to deliver you, but rather put your trust in the God of heaven and earth. God will save those who put their trust in Him and long to spend eternity with Him in the glorious splendor of heaven.
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21).
