Have You Lost Your Song?

Chippie[1]Several years ago Dick Macear told a story about a parakeet named Chippie.  Many of us can relate to this story.

A woman, while vacuuming her floor, decided to clean Chippie’s cage.  The phone rang.  She turned to answer the phone and left the vacuum cleaner running.  Chippie got sucked through the tube and into the canister.  There was Chippie, feathers a mess, dirt [all over his body, stunned, but alive.  She ran to the bathroom, stuck Chippie under the faucet and turned it on full blast.  She got her dryer, turned it on hot and high! It almost finished off Chippie!

The next day someone called to ask about the bird and the woman answered, “Well, Chippie doesn’t sing much any more.  He just sort of sits there and stares.”

Have you been there?  Have you had your cage vacuumed, been sucked into a dirt bag, stuck under a hot faucet, and been hit with a blast of hot until you just sit and stare and don’t have much song left?

We were made to sing, but often we allow someone or something to steal our song.  Some blame it on age, but some of the sweetest people I know are well up in years, and they still have their song.  Age just makes you better at what you are.

Others say it’s facing life’s problems.  Few people face greater problems then Paul as he sang in prison (Acts 16).  To keep your song alive you, must think positively (Philippians 4:8). Get outside of yourself and fill your life with Jesus.  One wrapped up in self makes a very small package!

Although we live in a world of vacuums, hair dryers, and song stealers; it’s great to know we don’t have to lose our song!
