Dead Man Walking

In sin we are lost because we have no clear or correct direction. In sin we are blind because we are in the dark where there is no light. In sin we are slaves because the devil has us in his grasp and we are under his power. In sin we are dead because there is no life outside of Christ.

Jesus, in the parable of the prodigal son, spoke of the father’s comments about his returning son, “for this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again” (Luke 15:24).

The Lord also said, referring to people who live in habitual sin, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin (John 8:34).

The apostle Paul writes, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1-10).

Before we become Christians we think we are alive but the truth is we are spiritually separated from God. We may be physically alive for 40-60-80-100 years but we are spiritually dead and have no eternal life relationship without God. We think we are “living it up” but we are actually “dying it down” (or something like that J).

So what are we to we do? God’s word has some beautiful answers.

*“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

*Jesus said, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” So the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. Therefore, I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins” (John 8:21-24).

*“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life” (I John 5:13).

Ephesians 2:1-10

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
