We live in a society that does all it can to avoid thinking about death. Try to look younger, block it from the mind, and stay away from funeral homes and cemeteries if at all possible. Live like there is no judgment and stay free from the will of God.
A brother in Christ once stated the opposite. He said he makes a conscious effort to drive by funeral homes and cemeteries on a regular basis to remind himself of the brevity of life and the certainty of death. It helps him to stay focused on living for Christ rather than the temporary things of this world.
What do you think about that? Do you think he has a “screw loose”? Is this brother off his rocker? Personally, I applaud him and have added this exercise to my life. You see, there is no way we can avoid death, but we can avoid eternal doom by living for Christ and running from sin. We need a daily reminder of the brevity of life and the certainty of death. It’s not morbid—it’s a great idea.
Jesus said, “…for unless that you believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins” (John 8:24). James writes, “You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” (James 4:14). We cannot control whether or not we will die, but we can control where we go when we die; therefore, it makes good sense to remind ourselves daily of these things.
