Attitude Check

AttitudeCheck-largeEvery once in a while, (maybe every day), we need to check our spiritual attitude. If we are not careful as Christians we can start seeing the cup 1/2 empty rather than 1/2 full. It takes no effort at all for some Christians to slip into a negative mindset. And why is it that it seems easier to gripe than be grateful? We have so much to be thankful for – even when things are awry.

The apostle Paul’s outlook on this life was molded and shaped by his life in Christ. He wrote to the Philippians, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13). Here is Paul, beaten and imprisoned, claiming the power of God to help him endure. He even writes, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4). What a magnificent example of how to view life. The number one thing in Paul’s life (his salvation relationship with God in Christ) was in great shape – everything else was secondary. As long as he was close to God he was full of joy.

The 17th century theologian, Matthew Henry, was once robbed. His Christ-like outlook is recorded in his diary which reads as follows: “Let me be thankful: first, because I was never robbed before; second, because although they took my purse, they did not take my life; third, because it was I who was robbed, not I who robbed.”

May God help all of us have the right kind of attitude which places the highest value on fellowship with God, to the point of thanking God even in difficult times. Can we say, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I say rejoice.”(?) Attitude check!!
