Consider these lines from Dr. Edward P. Philpost:
Voyager upon life’s sea;
To yourself be true,
And whatever your lot may be,
Paddle your own canoe.
We live in a society that believes in self-sufficiency. “We can do it all by ourselves” is not spoken in word but is certainly heard in deed. We build tall buildings, manufacture jet airplanes, dart all over the information world on the internet – my, oh my – is there anything we humans cannot do?
How naive can we be? Can we control volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts, floods, etc.? Can we cure cancer, AIDS, or even the common cold? Can we prevent some maniac from taking our life when he takes pot shots from atop some building with a high powered rifle? Can we prevent financial disaster from every possible economic scenario? Christians must not buy into the foolishness of our culture. We must not try to play god with all our abilities and assets. We must not try to paddle our own canoe. The wise person lives by faith in a God who does indeed have all power and control. Christians trust God to provide and protect according to His will.

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Psalm 23
